This is the Story of Sen̓áḵw

Our history has always lived in the land.

Sen̓áḵw rises on land that has always held meaning. This is one of the ancestral villages of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), a place shaped by trade, gathering, and abundance since time immemorial.

Once common here, the elk represents balance in nature and provided food, clothing, and tools for Sḵwx̱wú7mesh people.

Generations of
care and continuity.

This was a thriving place shaped by longhouses, trade routes, ceremony, and kinship. Life here was sustained by what the land offered—elk in the forests, cranberries in the marshes, sturgeon and seal along the coast. These resources formed livelihoods and lineages.

Fire played a central role in daily and ceremonial life, offering warmth, light, and a place for gathering and food preparation.

A time of dispossession.

But piece by piece, the land was taken. First for railways, then for industry, then by force. In 1913, every resident of Sen̓áḵw was removed. Families were loaded onto a barge and set adrift, with no place to land. Though the people were pushed out, the connection to this place remained unbroken.

Renewal and return.

For decades, the Nation carried the work of reclaiming Sen̓áḵw. Elders, council members, and business leaders dedicated their lives to it, and their commitment gathered strength over generations. In 2003, it led to the return of 10.48 acres of the original 80-acre Kitsilano Indian Reserve No. 6.

A place to gather
once again.

Though the skyline is changing, the name remains. Sen̓áḵw has long been a place of gathering, and so it is again. This new chapter carries that spirit forward, creating a village where everyone can share in the life and purpose of this place.

A future we build together.

Sen̓áḵw is a place shaped by land and guided by generations of leadership and perseverance. As it becomes a home once more, we welcome all people to live in connection, walk shared pathways, and join a community built for the long view.
